SPY and QQQ Price Action: October 14, 2026 Market Recap
SPY and QQQ both closed lower on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, and both finished near the bottom of the day’s range after opening below the prior close and never trading back up to it. SPY fell 8.41 points (-1.08%) to 769.60. QQQ fell 14.62 points (-1.97%) to 728.95, lower by more, with no reason offered here. The shape of the day is one-directional on the chart, and the levels around the closes are the useful part. This recap is about what is on the chart, not about why it printed.
The Shape of the Day: A Gap That Never Filled
SPY closed at 778.01 on Tuesday, October 13, and opened Wednesday at 774.92, a gap down of 3.09. The high for the day was 776.35, which sat 1.66 below the prior close. That is the whole definition of an unfilled gap: price never returned to the level it left behind. The low was 766.71, the range was 9.64, and the close at 769.60 landed 5.32 below the open.
QQQ closed Tuesday at 743.57 and opened at 737.98, a gap down of 5.59. The open itself was 0.85 below Tuesday’s low of 738.83, so the session began beneath the entire prior day’s range. The high of 740.53 stayed 3.04 below the prior close. The low was 726.39, the range was 14.14, and the close at 728.95 finished 9.03 below the open.
Where the Close Sat in the Range
A close location tells you where the day ended relative to its own extremes. SPY closed about 30% of the way up its range, which puts it in the bottom third. QQQ closed about 18% of the way up its range, closer still to the low. Opening below the prior close, keeping the high under it, and closing in the bottom third is a clean description of a day where the lower side held the chart from start to finish.
SPY Closed Right on an Early-October Zone
Marking earlier sessions on the SPY chart shows a cluster of reference points. The October 5 low was 769.63. The October 2 close was 769.64. The October 8 low was 770.44, the October 9 low was 775.14, and the October 13 low was 775.95. Wednesday’s close of 769.60 finished 0.03 below the October 5 low and 0.04 below the October 2 close, which is effectively on that zone.
The day’s low of 766.71 went 2.92 below the October 5 low and stayed 2.72 above 763.99, the October 1 close. The close of 769.60 is the lowest since October 1. Drawn on a chart, that gives a thin band at 769.63 to 769.64 with a lower reference at 766.71 and an older one at 763.99.
QQQ Closed Well Below Its October 8 Low
QQQ tells a different story on the same calendar. The October 8 low was 743.23, and Wednesday’s close of 728.95 finished 14.28 below it. There is no tight cluster to line up with here. The close is the lowest since September 18, when QQQ closed at 721.45. Within the span of data used for this recap, that is the reference that matters, and nothing earlier is claimed.
What a Close at or Under a Level Means and Does Not Mean
A close under a level is information about that one session. It says buyers did not push the settle back above the line on that day. It does not say what the next session will do, and a single close is not a pattern. A level that was lost can be reclaimed, and a level that held can fail later. Price-action traders treat the close as one data point and let the next bars add to it.
Levels to Mark for Thursday
For SPY, mark the 769.63 to 769.64 zone and the 766.71 low from Wednesday. For QQQ, mark 743.23 overhead, which is the October 8 low, and 726.39 beneath, which is Wednesday’s low. Those four lines, plus the prior close and Wednesday’s high on each chart, are enough.
Thursday Morning: Treat the 8:30 Cluster as One Bar
Thursday, October 15, has a dense 8:30am ET cluster on the calendar. Listed items include PPI m/m (forecast 0.6%, previous 0.4%), Retail Sales m/m (forecast 0.3%, previous 1.2%), and Unemployment Claims (forecast 199K, previous 197K). Those are forecast and previous values only, and no results exist yet. Later on the calendar, Hammack is listed at 4:30pm, and Fed Chairman Warsh is listed as a high-impact speaker at 11:30pm ET, outside regular hours.
A price-action trader can handle a cluster like this by treating the whole group as a single bar and waiting for it to close. Many items arriving together make the first prints hard to read, and a completed bar shows where price settled against the marked lines. Waiting removes the guesswork of reacting to a candle that is still forming.
One Calendar Note for Friday
Friday, October 16, is monthly options expiration, the third Friday of the month.
Summary
Wednesday was a gap-down day on both charts that never filled and closed in the bottom third of the range. SPY finished on the 769.63 to 769.64 zone, and QQQ finished 14.28 below its October 8 low. The lines for Thursday are on the chart, a close is information about one day only, and trading involves risk of loss.
