SPY and QQQ Price Action: October 7, 2026 Market Recap
Wednesday, October 7 was a down day on the close-to-close scoreboard and a green day on the candle. Both of those are true at once, and the gap between them is where the useful price-action information sits. This recap sticks to the settled numbers and the levels they leave behind.
The Numbers
SPY opened at 775.77, ran to a high of 779.10, hit a low of 773.61, and settled at 777.22. Tuesday’s close was 779.09, so the day finished down 1.87 points, or 0.24%.
QQQ opened at 753.79, reached a high of 758.30, touched a low of 751.75, and settled at 757.73. Tuesday’s close was 759.66, so QQQ finished down 1.93 points, or 0.25%.
SPY closed 1.45 above its open, and QQQ closed 3.94 above its open. A change table shows a red day. The candle shows a body that closed higher than it started.
The Gap and What It Opened Against
SPY opened with a gap of 3.32 points below Tuesday’s low of 777.96. QQQ opened with a gap of 5.87 points below Tuesday’s close of 759.66. SPY’s open printed outside the prior day’s range, which is the cleanest kind of gap to mark on a chart, and QQQ’s open sat well below its prior close.
Tuesday itself had been a gap day. Both indexes had left a gap above Monday’s high on Tuesday, leaving an unfilled area between Monday’s high and Tuesday’s open. Monday’s high was 776.61 for SPY and 756.92 for QQQ. Those two prices form the boundary of the Tuesday gap, and they are the levels that mattered on Wednesday.
Monday’s High as the Gap Boundary
SPY’s low of 773.61 sat below both Monday’s high of 776.61 and Monday’s close of 774.83. QQQ’s low of 751.75 sat below both Monday’s high of 756.92 and Monday’s close of 756.20. That means the Tuesday gap was filled completely on both charts. Price traded through the whole area and out the other side.
The Reclaim
Here is the part that turns a plain gap-down into a more interesting candle. SPY closed at 777.22, above Monday’s high of 776.61. QQQ closed at 757.73, above Monday’s high of 756.92. The level that acted as the boundary of the gap, the line price had to trade down through, ended the session behind price instead of above it.
Both indexes also traded back up through the area where they had opened. SPY’s high of 779.10 landed inside Tuesday’s range of 777.96 to 781.62, so the gap down was closed on the SPY chart as well. This recap works from the daily numbers only, so it makes no claim about the order of the low and the high.
The same price, Monday’s high, did two jobs in one session. It was the line the gap-down open sat beneath, and it was the line both closes finished above.
QQQ Near the Highs, SPY Mid-Range
The two closes were not equally strong inside their own ranges. QQQ’s range ran from 751.75 to 758.30, and it settled about 91% of the way up that range, close to the high of the day. SPY’s range ran from 773.61 to 779.10, and it settled about 66% of the way up, a little above the middle but well short of the high.
QQQ’s high of 758.30 sits a small distance above its close. SPY’s high of 779.10 sits a larger distance above its close of 777.22. Two different candle shapes, marked differently by a trader who draws lines.
Where the Close Sits in the Recent Range
Within the window from September 17 through October 7, both closes ranked second highest. The highest close in that window was Tuesday, October 6, at 779.09 for SPY and 759.66 for QQQ. So a down day on the scoreboard still left both indexes one step below the top close of the three-week stretch. This recap says nothing about closes before September 17.
What a Price-Action Trader Marks Now
The list of lines is short. Monday’s high at 776.61 on SPY and 756.92 on QQQ is the first one, because it was both the gap boundary and the reclaimed level. Tuesday’s closes at 779.09 and 759.66 are the second, since they are the highest closes in the window. Wednesday’s lows at 773.61 and 751.75 are the third, because they mark how far the filled gap extended below. Wednesday’s highs at 779.10 and 758.30 round out the set.
These are reference points, not forecasts. A reclaimed level can hold or fail, and one close above a line does not settle which.
